But he allegedly decided to pop the question to Nikki because things “just feel really right”.
“They’re so happy,” a source told E! News, confirming the engagement. “They were crazy happy from the start. Their families love each other. It just feels really right.”
The insider added that Nikki and Ian had “been in love for years”, but were friends before their relationship turned romantic back in July.
“They were friends before, the groundwork had been laid before, another source told Us Weekly magazine.
“They had always been attracted to each other, but always in another relationship. It may seem quick, but they knew it was right. They believe in the same things. They are dedicated to their work and helping others.”
The pair will now be spending a lot of their professional time together, as Ian revealed earlier this week that he and Nikki have started a production company together.
“Nikki and I are starting a production company and we’re going to be able to tell even more stories that we really want to tell, everything from documentaries to TV shows to movies…all kinds of stuff,” Ian told E!. “Having the success of a television show like The Vampire Diaries really allows you to be able…now I get to start spreading my creative wings as well.”
“It’s going to be awesome. Listen, it’s about telling stories and it’s about creating the content to tell those stories and who’s going to distribute that content.”
Nikki, 26, has a history of throwing herself wholeheartedly into relationships, as she married American Idol contestant Paul McDonald in 2011 after just seven months of dating.
Nikki and Paul announced their split in March last year, and it was previously reported her loved ones were concerned about the speed at which her romance with Ian, 36, was progressing.
“Nikki’s crazy impulsive,” an insider told America’s OK! magazine. “Once she falls in love, she can’t think straight.”
